Bamboo is known as a sustainable crop. It is a fast growing plant – some species of bamboo will grow as much as three feet (1 meter) per day! Labeled the fastest growing plant on earth, it is renewable, easy-to-grow material. It requires no fertiliser and self-regenerates from its own roots, so it does not need to be replanted and requires no chemicals or pesticides.
Bamboo can be harvested within 1 to 5 years depending on the bamboo plant species. This in comparison to other hardwoods like oak trees which can take at least forty years before they can be harvested.
There are reported to be over one million acres of forests lost each week due to deforestation. This together with the recent and on-going fires in the Amazon Rain Forest, we need to work on reducing our carbon footprint and purchase more sustainable products when deciding on your material of choice for your blinds or floors.
There are many benefits to bamboo. Bamboo as a substitute for hardwoods, offers a versatile solution to drastically reduce this number and provides for a low carbon footprint in comparison and therefore helps to protect our forests.
